One Day Of Rugby Taught Me To Stop Chasing Perfection & Start Showing Up

I remember growing up when the most popular high school sports for girls were track and field, volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, cheerleading and cross-country. But Rugby? It was never even part of the conversation.

So when I was asked by Quest Nutrition to participate in an Olympic training experience with the United States women’s national rugby sevens team, I didn’t hesitate. I was all in.

Admittedly, I was nervous. However, that changed the moment I received the roster and recognized not one but two women who looked like me. Two Black women, smiling from ear to ear, standing tall as part of an Olympic history-making team. My anxiousness gave way to curiosity and pride.

Rugby has long been perceived as a predominately white sport. A 2020 report by The Guardian found that fewer than 8% of players identified as Black, Asian or from another minority ethnic background. And if you isolate that figure to solely Black athletes? The percentage drops even lower.

With representation so limited, the challenge isn’t just physical—it’s mental. It’s knowing you’re one of the few. It’s pushing your body to its limits while also carrying the invisible weight of visibility. But it’s also a gift to compete, to create space and to reshape the narrative in real time.

As two-time Olympian and Bronze medalist Ariana Ramsey reminded me after training, “Great and hard work shapes you into the athlete you’re meant to be. Your willingness to go to practice every day and be consistent is a life skill you’ll always need and use.”

Those words stuck with me because, as a Black woman athlete, or in my case, a journalist, showing up is only half the battle. It’s never just about the game or profession; it’s about rewriting what’s possible, even when the narrative was never written with us—Black women and many others from historically marginalized backgrounds—in mind. Is it about being seen? Yes, absolutely, but it’s also more than that; the older I get, the more I realize it’s about making sure the next little brown girl sees herself, too.

Being in the center of it all at Chula Vista Elite Training Center, one of the top Olympic training campuses in the country, the game itself challenged every physical limit I thought I knew.

It was exciting, yes, but it also sparked something deeper. It created an internal shift from imposter syndrome to embodied power. I began to understand that true strength in all forms isn’t just about physical ability. I missed a few kicks. My athleticism definitely didn’t kick in the way I hoped. And when it was time to race, did I come in first place? Absolutely not. (laughs)

But the real win had nothing to do with numbers. It was in letting go of the mental chains, silencing the inner critic and quieting the outside noise that sometimes held me back (and at times continues to do so) in my everyday life. The silent whispers of discouragement, defeat or doubt. The lingering question of “What if I’m not enough?” What if things don’t go as I planned? “What if I’m not ready or live up to the expectation?”

That day, I didn’t just show up on the field. I pushed through the noise. And not only did I show up for Dontaira K. Terrell in her full entirety—I proved something to myself and no one else. Even if I didn’t make the field goal, land the tackle or run my fastest race—I laughed through it all. No pressure. I was present. I enjoyed the moment. I took what I couldn’t do and turned it into a lesson, not a curveball.

When everyone else seems to be gaining momentum, racking up wins or living their so-called best lives, it can leave you crashing out and wondering, What about me?”

It took time to get here. For so long, I carried the weight of trying to be perfect. To be a winner. To overachieve, no matter the cost. That pressure has caused me more harm than good. But letting go of those limiting beliefs? That was the freedom. Who cared if I didn’t catch on as quickly as the person next to me? That was the push I didn’t know I needed.

If I’m honest, I grew up in a household of excellence. College-educated parents. High-achieving siblings. World travelers. Trophy winners. My older sisters aren’t just entrepreneurs and businesswomen—two are attorneys, and one is an audiologist (in fact, the first Black woman to receive a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree in the Midwest). So, as you can imagine, anything less than my best never felt like an option.

“Growing up, I worked really hard but didn’t immediately see the payout, so it kind of made me feel like what I was doing wasn’t worth it,” American rugby union player Nia Toliver said, reflecting on the advice she’d give to her younger self. “But when I think about where I am now, it’s because of the work I put in. It was a long-term gain—not immediate success.”

Talk about words that resonated.

In today’s society—from television to TikTok, Instagram and everything in between it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind. When everyone else seems to be gaining momentum, racking up wins or living their so-called best lives, it can leave you crashing out and wondering, What about me?”

We’re in a microwavable culture. Everything looks instant. But real success? Real alignment? It takes time. And that’s why I’ve had to learn to separate the two to put things into perspective. Just as Maya Angelou reminded us: “All great achievements require time.”

That’s also why I’m adamant about celebrating the small wins. They’re the proof of grit, grind and perseverance behind closed doors. The effort you’re putting in when no one is watching. When the applause is quiet. When the likes on the ‘Gram are few and far between. I know firsthand that those moments are the hardest.

It’s about reframing the narrative: you don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to keep going and keep showing up. After spending the day with the team, when it came time to leave the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site, another realization struck me. The roles of coaches, sports psychologists, team nutritionists, personal trainers and the list goes on in rugby mirrored something I’ve come to understand in my own life: your support system matters just as much as your skill set.

If you want to win at anything on the field or in real life, let me tell you, that foundation has to be solid. That encouragement, that accountability, that belief in you when you’re doubting yourself? That kind of support is top-tier because no matter how gifted you are, you can’t do it alone. To win in this thing called life, both on and off the playing field, you need people who help you stay in the game, even when life is doing the absolute most.

7 Black-Owned Summer Scents That Give Main Character Energy

“To all the ladies in the place with style and grace,” this one is for you! Summer’s here, and we’re not just outside; we’re showing up, showing out and smelling like a whole vibe. Not only are we trying to look good, we’re trying to smell good too.

But let’s be real—perfume isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your signature scent should match your energy. I’m talking scents that still linger in the room long after you leave, giving off that main character energy that’ll have heads turning and your presence unforgettable. Is it soft and sweet? Bold and spicy? Warm and woody with a little intrigue?

Either way, that’s why we pulled together this list of handpicked must-have perfumes that are, of course, made for us, by us. Ready to smell like your higher self? Get your wallets ready, and let’s get into it.

This fragrance speaks volumes, literally and figuratively. Founder Maya Nije developed her love for perfumery by using scents as a way to bottle memories, moments and emotions in time. Inspired by Minnie Riperton’s 1970 song of the same name, “Les Fleurs,” it is a celebration of life with a fresh and fruity, genderless blend crafted with eco-friendly and sustainable best practices in mind.

Maya Njie Les Fleurs Eau de Parfum 50ml, $, available at Liberty London

Life is lifin’ for so many of us, and we all need and deserve a pick-me-up. What better way to reinvigorate your spirit than with a scent that embodies self-care? Founded in 2023 by Keta Burke-Williams, this award-winning, Bronx-born brand is centered on intention, with each note crafted to exude intimacy and harmony. As Keta puts it, “Scent is a language everyone can understand—but few have the opportunity to speak.”

Ourside Dusk Eau de Parfum, 1.7 oz., $, available at Bergdorf Goodman

An ode to the rich legacy of Josephine Baker, Harlem’s own “Bronze Goddess,” this fragrance from the Harlem Candle Co. captures her bold and radiant essence. It is one of many scents that pays homage to the beauty and brilliance of Harlem, exuding elegance and timeless charm with every note. The perfect aroma for wherever life takes you, it is flirtatious and free-spirited and comes in travel and full sizes.

Don’t you just love a delicate floral smell that reminds you of the beauty of a fresh flower bouquet? This fragrance captures love in all its forms, from self-love to platonic, romantic and even familial love. It’s the kind of scent that’ll lift you, soften you and remind you you’re worthy of every kind of tenderness. It’s intimate, with beauty in every note, from jasmine, rose, orange blossom and pear. Consider this a love letter in fragrance form.

MAIR Women’s Peony Silk Eau De Parfum Spray, 3.4 Oz, $, available at Macy’s

Talk about a thoughtfully crafted eau de parfum that sets the tone for your soft girl era and girl-next-door mood. Designed for all skin types, this scent taps into something deeper. With top notes of white tea and orange blossom, and heart notes of red rose, lavender and fresh greens, this one feels soft, thoughtful and smells like luxury in a bottle.

MOODEAUX Worthy IntenScenual Eau De Parfum, $, available at Credo Beauty

6 Food-Inspired Beauty Trends That’ll Have You Serving Looks

Glazed donut nails, tiramisu makeup, cinnamon cookie butter hair… Food-inspired beauty trends are giving new meaning to the term “serving looks,” and not unlike patisserie day on my favorite baking show, new options stay coming in hot by the second.

The inspo for your next look isn’t just on your feed — it’s in your fridge. Think  sugared pink and red tones with a slight glossy sheen, mimicking the dewy glow of that viral $19 strawberry (you know the one), or decadent toffee hues that give your look equal parts warmth and sweetness. Scrolling through #BeautyTok feels like making that weekly grocery run, and honestly? Yes, chef.

The trend goes beyond indulgent aesthetic choices, too. With the launch of the new Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balms, e.l.f. Cosmetics is taking food-inspired beauty trends to the next level. These buttery soft, nourishing lip balms combine hues that pay homage to gummy candies, strawberry shortcake, and toffee among other delicious treats, with coordinating scent and flavor profiles for that 360 experience deserving of a Michelin star.

Keep reading to learn more about six food-inspired beauty trends we’re loving for summer, and how to easily create each look.

Strawberry Girl

What’s sweet, ripe for the season, and can be spotted in abundance at Erewhon? It’s not just the most recent harvest of summer strawberries — when the warmer weather returns, so does the strawberry girl makeup trend.

Try your hand at the effect with the e.l.f. Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balm in Strawberry Shortcake, a soft, strawberry-scented pink tone that looks good on everyone, then pick up the Sheer For It Blush Tint in Pink Positive to create a juicy flush. Blend the hue along your cheeks, and add the smallest touch onto the bridge of your nose to create a sun-kissed appearance. Finish by decorating your complexion in faux freckles. Use the Holy Strokes Micro-Fine Brow Pen to add pinpoint dots over your cheeks and nose.

Y2K Candy

It’s the first day of summer in the year 2000. You’re snacking on a pouch of grape gummy sour straws as you pore over the latest issue of your favorite magazine, as the twinkly intro of “Candy” plays on MTV in the background. Life is good. Time travel may not be possible (yet), but luckily, an equally-sweet aesthetic is.

Swipe the candy-scented Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balm in Yummy Gummy onto your lips to give a nod to your grape sour straws, then use the H2O Proof Inkwell Eyeliner in Lavender Daze to trace your upper lash line, winging it out at the end. Keep the Y2K vibes going by incorporating a touch of tasteful iridescence over your cheekbones. The Halo Glow Highlight Beauty Wand in IRL Angel is perfect for the effect, dipping a toe into the frosted makeup trends of years past without going full ice bath.

Espresso-core

No matter how you take your coffee in the morning, the espresso-core trend is one that looks great on everyone. Like the latte makeup trend, espresso-core is a blend of warm neutrals, but with a shot of extra depth — think darker, richer tones, and sultry vibes.

Start first with the lip combo to set the tone. Use the e.l.f. Cream Glide Lip Liner in Espresso Martini to trace the shape of your lips, then fill in your pout 50% of the way with the creamy formula, leaving some empty space at the center of your top and bottom lip to let your natural color peek through. Build up the intensity as you see fit, then swipe the coffee-flavored Glow Reviver Melting Balm in Java Chip over the top. Press your lips together to blend the colors and set the combo in place, then pick up the Bite-Size Eyeshadow Palette in Love You a Latte to bring a jolt of color to your eyes. Pat the deepest brown shade onto your lids, concentrating most of the hue along the upper lash line, then dip a blending brush into the warm terracotta tone to blend out the shade, diffusing the color as you reach your crease.

Blackberry Grunge

Whether you’re using the actual fruit as your muse, or the rich stain left behind after polishing off the tiny container you picked up on your grocery run, there’s something just so appropriately ‘90s about a rich blackberry hue. Use that as your inspiration for a grunge-era look that would do the lead singers of your favorite ’90s girl rock band proud.

Sweep the blackberry-scented Glow Reviver Melting Balm in Blackberry Sorbet across your lips. Pick up the Instant Lift Brow Pencil in a shade that matches your natural hair color to give your arches a full, fluffy appearance, using the spoolie to evenly distribute the formula. Finish by lining your eyes with the Smoky Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Black Velvet, smudging the color out with your finger for perfectly imperfect authenticity.

Cherry Punk

For those about to rock, we salute you. Throw “Cherry Bomb” on in the background and channel your inner rock goddess with the cherry punk aesthetic.

Start by swiping the Glow Reviver Melting Balm in Wild Cherry — a saturated, buttery red with a patent leather shine and a cherry flavor — across your pout, then mirror that energy on your cheeks with the Putty Blush in Caribbean. Pro tip: For an authentic punk look, take a page out of the ‘80s-era blush placement and blend the color across your cheekbones, directing the formula upwards. To finish, pick up the Intense Ink Eyeliner and draw on a cat-eye with an extended wing sharp enough to cut anyone who comes too close.

Sticky Toffee Chic

Have you ever been downright mesmerized by that sticky toffee sauce poured over a freshly baked sponge cake? Warm, golden, and so shiny it almost glows on its descent. Incorporate all that decadence into your look by reaching for warm, rich metallics.

Sweep the e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow in Meteor, a molten bronze hue, over your lids, then use your finger or an eyeshadow brush to diffuse the color as you reach your crease. Then, pick up the Halo Glow Highlight Beauty Wand in Holographic Honey and swipe it over the high points of your face — across your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, and onto the top of your cupid’s bow — to impart a luminous glow. Just like that warm, indulgent toffee sauce, a layer of the vanilla-flavored Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balm in Vanilla Toffee serves as the finishing (yet ever essential) touch.

5 Travel Outfits That Slay The Airport

This Korean Shampoo Doubles As Hair Perfume & Actually Delivers Results

As someone who doesn’t get a trim as often as she should (I’m growing my hair out, okay?), I expect a lot from my humble shampoo and conditioner. I want them to cleanse my scalp and strands of the daily lashings of dry shampoo, not to mention smooth frizz, minimize split ends, boost shine, and make my lengths smell incredible. I don’t think that’s a tall order, especially given how far haircare tech has come. But it’s my job to test these products out, and you’d be surprized how many brands underdeliver. So when I heard that Kundal — Korea’s number one shampoo brand — had landed at Amazon and Walmart, too, I sat up, took note, and headed straight to TikTok to see what all the fuss was about.

While Korea’s skincare continues to enjoy the spotlight, it’s now haircare’s turn to shine, with Kundal taking center stage. On TikTok, the hashtag #Kundal now has over 17.3K posts and counting, many racking up tens of thousands of views, likes, and comments. The consensus? It’s one of the best-smelling — yes, smelling — hair brands out there.

According to the brand’s legions of fans, hair perfume has nothing on Kundal’s shampoo range, which features fragrances like White Musk (clean, soft, and powdery), Cherry Blossom (lightly floral and refreshing), and Violet Muguet (sweet and slightly green). There are also matching conditioning treatments, a scalp tonic, and a post-wash serum, all of which smell just as good. In fact, some are even filming themselves “blind” reviewing the collection based on scent alone.

It seems the most popular scent is White Musk — a warm “skin scent” with a spicy, intimate edge. As luck would have it, White Musk was the fragrance that landed on my desk, namely the Honey & Macadamia Shampoo White Musk, $14.31, and the Honey & Macadamia Protein Treatment White Musk, $14.86. It’s not all hype — they do smell incredible. Hours after using the shampoo and treatment, my partner walked into a bathroom that smelled like a high-end spa. He was convinced I’d spritzed on perfume before bed. Nope, just my hair.

Ask any fragrance obsessive how to smell good all day, and I bet they’ll recommend a hair perfume. Unlike regular fragrance sprayed on skin or clothes, hair perfume really lingers, and the natural movement of your lengths means you catch heavenly wafts throughout the day. But here’s the thing: A lot of them contain alcohol, which can be drying on already parched or fragile strands. The beauty of Kundal’s hair collection is that it’s not all scent over substance; the incredible fragrance is suspended in a handful of nourishing ingredients.

I’ll start with the shampoo. The ingredients list boasts an abundance of smoothing, shine-enhancing plant oils, including coconut, avocado, macadamia, and jojoba oils. Then there’s ultra-moisturizing shea butter to reduce dryness and frizz, plus mild surfactants like lauryl hydroxysultaine to cleanse the scalp and strands without stripping. Don’t underestimate it, though. The lather is rich and creamy, and I only need to shampoo once, rather than twice like usual. My hair always feels light and clean, not weighed down or greasy. It’s been two days since I last washed my hair, and I can still smell the subtle, powdery, musky scent on my strands.

Then there’s the protein treatment, a favourite among people with all hair types — especially those with type 4 natural hair, who love its moisturizing benefits. One content creator even called it “life-saving” for her curls. I have fine hair, but a lot of it, and I use the treatment as a conditioner, letting it work its magic for around five minutes. As the name suggests, the star ingredients are proteins, particularly hydrolyzed soy protein, hydrolyzed keratin, and silk amino acids. Certified trichologist Angela Onuoha had previously told me that, in haircare, proteins are considered a type of conditioning agent, and that every hair type can benefit from them to help protect and temporarily repair hair from heat damage and environmental stressors like harsh weather and pollution.

@thatssotrending I’m on a healthy hair journey. @KUNDAL US is making it easier for the natural hair community. My type 4 hair felt so good after using these products! 💜💜💜 #kundalxbeautyko #kundal #naturalhairtiktok #type4hair #curlyhairproducts #washday #healthyhairjourney #haircare #haircareproducts #koreanbeauty ♬ original sound – Jacobdior

Onuoha explained that most proteins latch onto the surface of hair strands, forming a protective film that smooths the hair shaft. The result? Softer, shinier-looking hair. The proteins in this treatment are “hydrolyzed” — essentially broken down into smaller molecules. Onuoha also noted that hydrolyzed proteins can potentially penetrate the hair shaft to help strengthen it from within, offering further protection against damage.

I judge a treatment by how it makes my hair feel when I rinse it out, and I was surprized by how silky it was, not to mention how easily it disappeared. Most treatments leave behind a greasy residue, but this felt more like a lightweight conditioner that left my hair — especially my very split ends — feeling soft and looking a hell of a lot healthier. Of course, a good hair oil helps, too. I absolutely love Kérastase Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops Hair Oil, $36, and while it’s the most expensive product in my routine, a little goes a very long way.

Speaking of price, I was surprized to learn that Kundal’s 500ml shampoo and treatment are under $15 each. Considering the incredible fragrance, not to mention the megamix of expert-approved ingredients, I’d say the brand is well worth the money. Better still, it’s available at Amazon and Walmart. My advice? Grab a shampoo and treatment duo before they sell out — and if TikTok’s fragrance enthusiasts have anything to do with it, they certainly will.

These 19 Summer Haircut Trends Are A Total Reset

I Didn't Cut My Hair For A Year & I Learnt A Lot

How Are We All Budgeting On Hair Color?

Princess Nails Are Set To Be The Chic, Low-Effort Manicure Of The Summer

Of all the nail trends to emerge in 2025, there’s no doubt that minimalist manicures are reigning supreme. With soap nails, vanilla French tips, and angel chrome finishes showing no sign of dwindling in popularity, you’d be forgiven for thinking that there’s simply no room for another pared-back manicure to capture our attention. Yet that’s exactly what this latest viral trend is: Introducing princess nails.

“Every few months we see the sheer, neutral manicure reinvented, and princess nails are a subtle variation on this classic style,” explains international manicurist Georgia Rae. The thing that sets them apart from other manicures? Princess nails might look simple, but every detail has been perfectly executed so that they ooze luxury. “The look is inspired by royalty who are known for maintaining a very natural, but always perfectly-groomed manicure,” explains Rae.

Ahead, we explore what makes the perfect princess manicure and why this nail look will be holding court for summer 2025.

What are princess nails?

The appeal of princess nails lies in their simplicity. The look is so pared back it’s even being dubbed “recession indicator” nails on social media — a nod to the theory that people often swap extravagant beauty habits for simpler ones when the economy is about to take a nosedive.

While the trend is certainly minimalist, it remains an enchanting look thanks to the level of prep and polish: “The princess nail trend is all about shorter length nails in sheer, natural pinks, which echo the preference of the Royal family’s beauty protocol of well-maintained and manicured natural nails,” explains session manicurist Ami Streets. Every nail expert I spoke to said that princess nails look great on shorter lengths, with a soft square or slightly rounded shape preferred. But when it comes to manicures, there are no rules; opt for whichever length you’re comfortable with.

How do you create princess nails?

Unless you’re a pro at doing your own nails, then no doubt getting your princess nails done in a salon will give you the best results, as the key lies in the prep. “Find a manicurist who is meticulous with their preparation and polish application,” says Rae, especially intricate cuticle work, which requires a specific level of skill. She even goes as far as to say that establishing a hand and nail care routine before you get your princess manicure will give you the best results: “At the very least, moisturize your hands and apply a cuticle oil regularly as the final step in your evening routine,” she advises.

If you are doing your own nails at home, then the right tools, like a proper cuticle stick and clippers, can make all the difference. The Ulta Beauty Collection Basics Manicure 5 Piece Kit, $5, is great if you like that polished aesthetic. “Since the nails are kept short and the polish is so delicate, any imperfections or roughness might be noticeable,” explains Streets. Focus on pushing back cuticles, buffing the surface of the nail, and filing into shape for a perfect finish.

As for the color? “I would opt for a sheer beige or pink tint that blurs any imperfections and complements your skin tone,” says Rae. Alternatively, if you don’t like such a natural look, then princess nails will also work with a milkier color followed by a glossy top coat. In the salon, our experts rate BioSculpture in shade Luka or The GelBottle BIAB in Ballet as two beautiful sheer pink shades. If you’re recreating princess nails at home, then Essie Gel Couture in Fairy Tailor, $13, OPI Put It In Neutral, $11.99, and Chanel La Base Camélia, $33, all come highly recommended.

Clinique’s New Foundation Feels Like A Skin Tint — But Wears Like Makeup

When it comes to iconic American beauty brands, Clinique is firmly on my Mount Rushmore — to borrow another made-in-USA metaphor. Some of my most formative beauty memories revolve around Clinique: Growing up, I’d often accompany my mom to the impeccably lit Clinique counter at our local mall department store. (If I were on my best behavior, I’d get to keep the free gift-with-purchase bag of minis as a reward.) Years later, the brand is still one of my mom’s go-tos — and mine, too. From the epic resurgence of Black Honey lipstick to the hydrating Moisture Surge skincare, the brand isn’t lacking in bestselling products — and I think I just found a new one in the making.

Enter: Clinique’s new Even Better Clinical Foundation, which combines sheer coverage with broad-spectrum SPF 45 protection.

Clinique Even Better Clinical Vitamin Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Foundation, $48

If you’ve ever tried the brand’s Even Better Clinical Serum, you know that the brightening benefits are next-level; IMO, if that serum had a baby with your favorite skin tint, the result would be this foundation. It’s super lightweight and feels like skincare, but adds a sheer, buildable amount of coverage that never looks like makeup — just naturally radiant, healthy skin.

I don’t necessarily need my makeup to do my skincare’s job, but I do love that this stuff contains loads of ingredients that I’d normally find in serums and moisturizers: There’s vitamins C and E to brighten and strengthen skin, plus vitamin B3 (aka niacinamide) to keep pores clear. Plus, it’s waterproof, sweat- and humidity-resistant, oil-free, and non-comedogenic, so it shouldn’t break you out.

I love a lightweight, buildable foundation, and this one immediately impressed me. It’s got a bit of a dewy finish, which normally wouldn’t work with my oily skin, but this makeup hits a perfect sweet spot of glow that makes me look like I just left the spa, not a workout.

I use two pumps of product to cover my entire face, and mix the shades Light Medium Warm 1 and Light Medium Warm 2 to get my perfect match. (Because the sheer coverage is flexible, multiple shades in the 27-shade range could work across multiple skin tones. I’m just a perfectionist.)

Happily, our beauty director, Jacqueline Kilikita, found a perfect shade match in Light Medium Cool 1. “At first swipe, I was taken aback by how perfectly shade Light Medium Cool 1 matched my skin tone — it disappeared instantly and blended in seamlessly with a brush,” she says. She used the website’s handy QR code, which matched her effortlessly and seamlessly. When it comes to coverage? “It’s pretty weightless but subtly blurred the post-acne pigmentation on my cheeks and softened the look of my dark circles,” she adds. “I’m hopeful the added vitamin C will help brighten things up even more, which makes me excited to keep using it.”

My favorite way to apply it is with a fluffy brush using lightweight strokes, and then setting with loose powder on my T-zone.)

Since my skin is oily, I found that I could boost the longevity by following up with setting powder and setting spray, but how well it lasts might depend on your skin type. Kilikita has skin that’s on the drier side: “That’s thanks to using strong retinoids recently, so my skin drank this foundation right up,” she says. “I think that’s why the finish leaned more matte than dewy on me, which I actually prefer in the summer. It makes me look and feel fresh.”

If you’re looking for full coverage, you might prefer Clinique’s Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation, which has similar skincare benefits with medium to full coverage. That said, I loved the Even Better Clinical Foundation for an everyday beat. It’s as lightweight as a skin tint, but with more pigment, and plays nice with concealer for extra coverage where needed. At $48, it’s priced on par with my mid- to high-end foundations, and certainly feels like a luxury product. My new go-to summer foundation? You’re looking right at it.

Through The Rain, Beyoncé Poured Light Into Black Girlhood At The Cowboy Carter Tour

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour has given us so many beautiful reminders to celebrate and honor Black girlhood. Even if you haven’t or don’t plan on going to a show, you’ve most likely seen Blue Ivy Carter serving as a dancer beside her mom or Rumi Carter adorably stealing the crowd’s heart and, as the internet puts it, clocking into work.

Knowing this, I was prepared for my own waterworks, but when I saw that the forecast for the May 28 show at MetLife Stadium, I was not ready for the impending, very real, relentless showers. I admittedly got irritated. I had been excited about this tour since it was announced in February and reading Editor Dontaira Terrell’s piece about her experience at the show the first night had me even more hype. But as I put my cowboy hat over my poncho and trekked my boots through the parking lot puddles, I had to remind myself that seeing Beyoncé perform (my eighth time!) was the reward — even if it did rain during the entire concert.

Though the Cowboy Carter World Tour is a reflection on Beyoncé’s work, there are significant moments that pay homage to the youth, joy and tenderness of Black girlhood.

taryn finley

I couldn’t have imagined the emotional baptism I was about to experience. From “American Requiem” to “Amen,” Bey sang with the passion, depth and vocal athleticism that can only be achieved with God’s touch and more than three decades of hard work. The churchy call-and-response during “Why Don’t You Love Me,” the combined nod to the “Bills, Bills, Bills” video and her haircare line Cecred, and the Renaissance medley were more than enough to prove she’s one of one.

And though the Cowboy Carter World Tour is a reflection on Beyoncé’s work, there are significant moments that pay homage to the youth, joy and tenderness of Black girlhood. Most notably while singing “Protector” with wet-n-wavy hair and singing to a crowd, a cold and drenched Bey professes her love for her girls surrounded by a pyramid of her dancers. Blue Ivy— who’s all up and down this tour — hovers right above her, enveloping her mom and little sister in an embrace.

“I feel proud of who I am because you need me,” Beyoncé croons right before Rumi, 7, comes on stage, joyful, light and fearless. These are some of the purest qualities of childhood that the world tries to rob Black girls of from an early age. Seeing the most powerful performing artist in the world give us a visual representation of what it looks like to revere and protect that light was significant. And it felt even more potent as the rain continued.

Even moments when Bey wasn’t on stage felt femininity persevering. Violinist Ezinma shared on her Instagram that she had never played in the rain. Yet she killed it while self-proclaimed “Trap Ballerina” Trinity Joy and movement artist Jahaira Myers gave a contemporary dance performance of a lifetime on a slippery stage. The crowd was mesmerized watching tap dancer Kaitlyn Sardin riverdance to “Flamenco.”

While “16 Carriages” mourns the childhood Bey sacrificed for her career, she uses Cowboy Carter to honor the child that’s still inside of her, giving us glimpses of little Bey and paying homage to her country roots the way that she wants to. And she prompts us as an audience to do the same while lifting up the next generation.

The messaging of this tour, and this Act II era Beyoncé is in, has been incredibly potent. But there was something uniquely beautiful about watching it all take place in the rain. In Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, she wrote, “You wanna fly, you got to give up the s**t that weighs you down.” Watching Beyoncé dance in the rain with her daughters — along with my seven girlfriends — felt like the weight of the world was washed away and I could fly. Funny enough, the rain stopped at the very end, right before Bey sang “Amen.”

Watching Beyoncé dance in the rain with her daughters — along with my seven girlfriends — felt like the weight of the world was washed away and I could fly.

Witnessing Bey, her girls, and the rest of the performers proffer a declaration to our liberation felt like a spiritual awakening. It felt like they were imploring us to be carefree and color outside of the lines. And it was a reminder that we don’t have to work to earn the ease and joy it takes to dance in the rain.

Beyoncé takes her Cowboy Carter Tour to London next where she’ll be from June 5 to 16.
